ALBANY-SARATOGA  SPEEDWAY   -   MALTA  NY

a 0.36-mile dirt oval on U.S. Route 9 in Malta, New York. The track features racing on Friday nights, with five different weekly racing divisions, including DIRTcar modifieds, DIRTcar sportsman, limited sportsman, pro stocks and street stocks and also four cylinder racers.  The speedway opened in 1965.  The track held NASCAR Cup Series races in 1970 and 1971.  The 1970 race saw Bobby Isaac earn the pole position and jump out to lead the first 47 laps.  Richard Petty would then lead for 131 laps before Bobby Allison muscled him aside to be at the point for 67 circuits.  With five laps to go Allison would have issues and Petty would be there to take advantage.  Petty grabbed the win, while Allison finished second.  Dave Marcis was third; Neil Castles fourth and G.C. Spencer fifth.  The 1971

affair saw Petty start on the pole and lead the first 58 laps.  The next 12 laps saw the lead swapped around between J.D. McDuffie, Pete Hamilton and Dave Marcis.  On lap 71 Petty once again got into the lead.  Marcis wrestled it away from Petty and headed the field for the next 57 laps.  Petty recaptured the lead with 95 laps to go and drove away to claim the win by two laps.  Marcis was second and McDuffie third.  James Hylton finished fourth and Elmo Langley rounded out the top five.  From 1977 it was owned by the family of C.J. Richards, a founder of the Champlain Valley Racing Association.  In 2011 it was put up for sale. After a period of uncertainty as to whether or not it would continue to be used for racing, it was purchased by the owners of Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, New York. It is still in operation.
