MIKE  BAUMGARNER  -  02/15/1975

Baumgarner first crawled on top of the pit box to serve as crew chief in 2004. He led Terry Labonte to a seventh place finish at Pocono.  He next called the shots in 2006; again for Terry Labonte, but both finishes were worse than 20th.  He began a full time stint as crew chief working for Rick Hendrick and driver Kyle Busch, in 2007.  They made 19 starts together and won on four occasions.  They had 14 top five and 16 top ten finishes that season.  Mark Martin added two more top five finishes that year.  From there he wasn't a crew chief again until 2013.  He moved from HMS to JR, where he called the shots for a car shared among several drivers.  Among them were Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray and others.  Kahne supplied the cars only top fives finishes; with a best of second at Charlotte and a third (Talladega) and a fourth (Atlanta).  They had seven top tens in those eleven starts.  From 2014-2020 he served as JRM's director of race operations.  During that span JRM won three Xfinity Series Championships.  While director of race operations, Mike did serve as crew chief

on five occasions.  He had three starts with Dale Earnhardt Jr and one each with Elliott Sadler and Tyler Reddick.  The drivers posted a worst finish of seventh, with four top fives.  In 2021, he was called upon to lead the efforts of JRM's #1 car with driver Michael Annett.  They made 26 starts, but had a disappointing year, as Annett was only able to post one top ten finish.  Josh Berry also made five starts and showed that Baumgarner had the knowledge need to call the right shots to get the car into victory lane.  In those five starts, the duo captured a win at Las Vegas and added two top five and four top ten finishes.  Sam Mayer was brought on board to pilot the #1 in 2022, as Annett decided to retire.  Baumgarner was paired with Josh Berry in 2022 since they had had such good success in that brief span in 2021.  Their success continued as the had three finishes inside the top four in the first four races. They broke through and won at Dover; locking them into the Chase.  They won again at Charlotte, and when the play-offs started he posted good results and advanced through the first two rounds.  He posted his third win in the round of eight; locking him into the Championship Four.  At that race, they were one of three JRM teams in the final four.  But in the end, none of the cars could keep up with a speedy Ty Gibbs, as he led 125 of 200 laps to win the Xfinity Championship.  They finished fourth in the points standings.  In September of 2022, it was announced that Baumgarner would become the Director of Competition at JRM beginning in 2023.  A 27-year veteran of the sport, it’s a new, but familiar spot for the 47-year-old Bumgarner, who served as race operations director for JRM from 2014-20 and oversaw the production and maintenance of the team’s race car inventory.  For his career as a crew chief; he had the three Cup races; and he led his drivers in all or part of seven seasons.  In the Xfinity Series, he made 130 starts; got eight wins, 38 top five and 72 top tens finishes.
