BILL  BLAIR   -  07/14/1911 - 11/02/1995

Blair started his racing career as a bootlegger in the 1930s.  In 1939, he began racing at the newly-constructed High Point Speedway, and he opened his own track Tri-City Speedway after World War II.  Blair was one of the pioneers of NASCAR, racing in the series first year of existence.  He raced six of the eight events and finished eighth in points.  He had a worst finish of 12th and five top five finishes.  In 1950; he won his first race.  It would come at Vernon Fairgrounds in NY on June 18th, when he beat out Lloyd Moore who finished second.  He ran 16 of 19 races that year was and 10th in points.  He was win-less the following year and had a best finish of second at Columbia Speedway.  1952 saw him run 19 of 34 races, and once again go back to victory lane. He had a good season as the only races he finished worse than tenth was when he had mechanical issues or crashed.  He would claim his win at Lakewood Speedway on April 20th.  He would out distance Ed Samples and Lee Petty who made up the top three.  For the year in his 19 starts he finished second twice, had ten top five and 13 top ten finishes.  The next year he would find his way to the winners circle again, and for the final time.  He won the season opening race on the Daytona Beach Course as he

outrun Fonty Flock.  The season seemed to go downhill from there as he was only able to post six top five and eight top ten finishes in 21 starts.  He only made 19 starts in 1954, and had a best finish of fifth at Daytona on the beach, and also at Charlotte.  He just made 12 starts in 1955 and had a best finish of eleventh at North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.  He only made one start in 1957, and 1958 was his final season. His final start came at Lakewood Speedway where he would start and finish 33rd when his engine failed.  Blair, Jimmie Lewallen, and Fred Harb are the subject of the independent movie "Red Dirt Rising" which is based on the book Red Dirt Tracks: The Forgotten Heroes of Early Stockcar Racing"
