BOYD'S  SPEEDWAY   -   ROME  GA

First opened in as a clay oval in 1952 by its namesake, E.A. Boyd. It was paved and operated as a paved track from 1962 through 1976. The track was converted back to dirt in 1977 and continues in operation today. The track is a 1/3 mile oval and hosted the Cup Series on two occasions. These races came during the time when the track was paved. The first was in 1962. Richard Petty started on the pole and led 172 laps. He was leading with 19 laps to go when he suffered some sort of issue that saw Joe Weatherly pass him and claim the win. Petty finished the race in fourth place; but three laps behind. The other race came in 1964 and saw Petty once again on

the pole. The race saw David Pearson jump to the lead at the drop of the green and lead the first 100 laps. Petty got around Pearson and led the next 60 circuits. But Pearson would get his machine past Petty at that point and lead the final 140 laps to claim the win by over two laps. As of 2022 the track runs events about every other weekend. Races include series such as the World of Outlaws, Southern All Stars, USCS Sprints among others.
