COASTAL  SPEEDWAY   -   MYRTLE  BEACH  NC

The track was a 1/2 mile dirt oval race track that opened in 1949.  It held NASCAR Sportsman events beginning in 1955.  The first Cup race was held in 1956.  It was 200 laps that saw Ralph Moody start on the pole.  He would crash out on lap 61 and finish 16th.  Fireball Roberts would beat Billy Meyers to grab the win.  The only other Cup race held here took place in 1957.  Johnny Allen started first, but Fireball Roberts would jump into the lead.  It would be a short day for Allen as his fan failed and led to over-heating problems and he fell out after only ten laps.  Roberts led the first 185 laps but would finish third two laps behind.  Gwyn Staley would take the lead with 15 laps to go and beat Eddie Pagan by a lap.  Other forms of racing continued on to 1976.
