DIXIE  SPEEDWAY   -   BIRMINGHAM  AL

This was a 1/4 mile paved track.  It began holding various NASCAR series races in 1960.  Starting as early as January the Modified Series raced there.  15 Modified events were held there before the Cup series rolled in for a 200 lap race.  Ned Jarrett would win the pole and when the green flag fell; Jarrett drove off into the sunset as he outran the field by two laps to take the win.  Richard Petty would finish second, followed by Lee Petty, Joe Lee Johnson and Johnny Beauchamp.  Five more Modified races were held there as records show that Freddy Fryar and Bill Latham combined to win almost half of the 20 events.  The Modifieds returned for 1961 and the Alabama Gang dominated the races.  Bobby Allison would win eight times, while Red Farmer visited victory circle five times.  1962 was

the same as the previous year. This time Donnie Allison would join brother Bobby and Farmer in grabbing most all the wins.  Farmer won seven times (four in a row); while Bobby won just twice.  Donnie became king of the hill as he would snap up eleven wins; eight of those coming in a row.  The final race of 1962 was a whopping 500 laps and Donnie wheeled his 1932 Chevy to the win.  The 1962 season saw 23 races there; and the trio won 20 of them. Only Friday Hassler, Dave Mader and Fred Thomson managed to claim one of the other wins.  Two more races were held in 1963 with Farmer winning one of them.  Jerry Lawley won the final NASCAR sanctioned race there in August of 1963.
