DOG  TRACK  SPEEDWAY   -   MOYOCK  NC

Local greyhound racing was originally in Norfolk County in the 1930s, until Virginia officials shut down the Cavalier Kennel Club (CKC).  The CKC moved their operations a half mile south of the state line to a quarter-mile oval track in Moyock NC.  The track's primary market was the thousands of service men (mostly U.S. Navy personnel) that were stationed in Norfolk.  Not long after its establishment in North Carolina, anti-gambling advocates and the North Carolina Supreme Court upheld the North Carolina State Legislature's anti-dog-racing law in 1954.  After the Cavalier Kennel Club (CKC) greyhound racing track was eliminated by the North Carolina General Assembly,

Moyock began to host auto racing at the renamed Dog Track Speedway.  The first Cup race was held at the track in 1962.  The 1/4 mile track would see the drivers run 250 laps on the dirt oval.  Ned Jarrett would start out front and motor away from the field to win by over a lap.  Joe Weatherly and Curtis Crider finished second and third. NASCAR was back in 1963, this time for two races.  Once again Ned Jarrett was the class of the field as he jumped into the lead and led the first 178 laps.  Jimmy Pardue got by him and led the final 72 laps to get the win while Jarret came home second.  The September race in 1962 saw the distance expanded to 300 laps.  Joe Weatherly would lead 88 laps, but Jarrett would led 212 laps and once again get the win.  Only Weatherly could keep pace with Jarrett as the third place finisher was nine laps behind.  The 1964 race saw changes.  The track had been paved and expanded from 1/4 mile to a 1/3 mile.  But the same old driver found his way to the front as Jarrett once again out distanced the field as David Person would finish second one lap down.  The next race was in 1965 and Jarrett once again ran well.  This time he failed to lead any laps, as Dick Hutcherson would lead 269 laps, while Jarret finished second.  The race in November of 1965 was the final race of the 55 race season.  Jarrett returned to form and would beat Bobby Isaac by over a lap to get the win.  Jarrett would claim 13 wins this season and be the Cup Champion. He would only run a part time schedule the following year. With Jarrett retired for the most part, the 1966 race saw wide open for a new driver to dominate.  Richard Petty won the pole and led the first 84 laps.  He then had an ignition problem and fell out of the race while leading. David Pearson was there to pick up the lead, led the rest of the laps and get the win.  Tiny Lund was second one lap behind.  The track was closed later in 1966 due to declining attendance, poor revenues and larger tracks being built nearby.
