WILLIAM  CLYDE  "CHASE"  ELLIOTT   -   11/28/1995

an American professional stock car racing driver, and is the son of 1988 Winston Cup Series champion Bill Elliott.  Elliott raced in 40 races in various series in 2010, winning twelve events over the course of the year and finishing in the top ten 38 times.  It was the third season of his racing career, and he won the Blizzard Series, Miller Lite and Gulf Coast championship en route to being named the Georgia Asphalt Pro Late Model Series Rookie of the Year.  He ended the season by winning the Winchester 400.  Sports Illustrated named Elliott as the high school player of the week in April 2011.  Later that year, just after his sixteenth birthday, he won the Snowball Derby and became the race's youngest winner.  Father Bill was his son's spotter and is shown here in victory lane with him.  In 2012, he won the Alan Turner Snowflake 100, prelude to the Snowball Derby, for the second time in three years.  In November 2013, Elliott won the All American 400, becoming the first driver to win all four of the country's largest short-track races: the All American 400, the Snowball Derby, the World Crown 300 and the Winchester 400.  Elliott again won the Snowball Derby in 2015 after initial winner Christopher Bell was disqualified.  In January 2013, it was announced that Elliott would compete in nine NASCAR Truck Series events for Hendrick Motorsports during the 2013 racing season, using trucks prepared by Turner Scott Motorsports.  In qualifying for the UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway, Elliott won his first career NASCAR pole position with a lap speed of 125.183 miles per hour, and became the youngest pole-sitter in Truck Series history.  Elliott would win his first race in the Chevrolet Silverado

250 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, in the first road course truck race outside the US; he was at the time the youngest winner in Truck Series history, at the age of 17 years, 9 months, and 4 days.  The win was however controversial as Elliott made contact with leader Ty Dillon in the last corner.  Dillon hit the tire barrier while Elliott went into the grass though recovered enough to be able to coast to the finish line ahead of Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Chad Hackenbracht.  In January 2014, it was announced that Elliott would be competing full-time in the Xfinity Series in 2014, driving the #9 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, with sponsorship from NAPA Auto Parts.  On April 4, 2014, Elliott won the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, holding Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch off after taking the lead with 16 laps to go.  On April 11, 2014,

Elliott won the VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway by passing Elliott Sadler on the last lap after restarting sixth with two laps to go.  Elliott won the EnjoyIllinois.com 300 at Chicagoland Speedway after holding off Trevor Bayne.  At Phoenix, Elliott clinched the Xfinity Series championship with a 53-point lead over teammate Regan Smith, becoming the first rookie and youngest driver to win a NASCAR national series title.  Later in the year, he was named the Xfinity Series' Most Popular Driver.  In 2015, Elliott received his first DNF in his career after being involved in the second big one at Daytona, finishing 28th. On September 11, Elliott won his first race of the season at Richmond, snapping his 36-race win-less streak.  He battled with Chris Buescher for the championship, but was unable to catch up and finished 2nd in points.  On January 29, 2015, Hendrick Motorsports announced Elliott would make his NASCAR Cup Series

debut in 2015, driving the #25 with Kenny Francis as crew chief.  He was scheduled to race in five races at Martinsville, Richmond, Charlotte, Indianapolis, and Darlington.  The team also announced that he will take over Jeff Gordon's #24 starting in 2016 as Gordon enters retirement.  Elliott's Cup debut in the STP 500 was threatened by potential rain; due to a lack of owner's points and race attempts, had qualifying been rained out, he would have failed to qualify.  Elliott eventually recorded a lap speed of 96.919 mph, and qualified 27th.  During the race, contact with Brett Moffitt on lap 75 forced his car to drop debris onto the track and damage to hang from its rear, while his power steering was damaged.  Elliott would

ultimately finish 38th, 73 laps down.  On November 23, 2015, Elliott was named the 2015 NASCAR Xfinity Series Most Popular Driver for the second year in a row.  Elliott joined the Cup Series full-time in 2016, driving the #24 with Alan Gustafson as crew chief.  Elliott carried primary sponsorship from NAPA (twenty-four races), 3M (five races), SunEnergy1 (four races), Kelley Blue Book (two races), and Mountain Dew (two races).  He won the 2016 Rookie of the Year over Ryan Blaney, Chris Buescher,

Jeffrey Earnhardt, and Brian Scott.  In his Daytona 500 debut, Elliott won the pole with a speed of 196.314 miles per hour.  At the age of 20, he became the youngest pole-sitter in 500 history.  Elliott led three laps in the race, but on lap 18, spun exiting turn four and slid into the grass, damaging the front of the car.  Elliott returned to the race on lap 59, 40 laps down, and finished 37th.  The next week he finished 8th at Atlanta for his first Sprint Cup top ten finish.  The following week, at Las Vegas, Elliott showed a strong car all day and even had his car inside the top 5 with 40 laps to go, but crashed and finished 38th.  Elliott picked up more top tens during the spring, finishing 5th at Texas for his first career Top-5, 4th at Bristol, 5th at

Talladega, 9th at Kansas, 3rd at Dover, 8th in the Coca-Cola 600, and a career best second at Michigan.  At Pocono for the running of the Axalta "We Paint Winners" 400, Elliott would have his breakout race of his Sprint Cup career, Elliott would start 13th and later get the lead in the race and he would lead a race high of 51 laps, leading the most laps in a Cup race for the first time in his career.  On a restart Elliott would lose the lead and then race came down close to fuel but the fuel would hold and he would finish 4th.  At Michigan in June, Elliott finished second after he missed a shift in the lead.  He won the fan vote to advance into the All-Star Race along with Danica Patrick where he finished a respectable 7th after nearly winning the final segment of the Sprint Showdown, losing to Kyle Larson in a photo finish.  Fifteen races into his rookie season he sat 6th in the standings, the highest without a victory, with two poles for the Daytona 500 and at

Talladega, six Top-5's and eleven Top-10's.  Two weeks later at Sonoma, Elliott started 16th, but would ultimately finish 21st.  He was one of the first rookies to qualify for the Chase along with Chris Buescher since Denny Hamlin in 2006.  On September 18 at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, he had a chance at his first win but a late caution wiped out his 3 second lead over Martin Truex Jr. who would go on to win the race while Elliott would finish in 3rd.  For the year Elliott posted ten top five finishes with best of second at Michigan (twice).  He posted 17 top ten finishes and finished tenth in the championship points standings In 2017 Elliott climbed behind the wheel of the #24 with Gustafson as crew chief for an all assault on the

Cup Championship.  He won the pole for the season opening Daytona 500 but a single car accident eliminated him from the race.  He posted 11 Top 10 finishes in the season first 15 races; but then had a slump but had a best finish of 13th over then next eight races.  He rebounded and qualified for the Chase via points.  On several occasions it looked like Elliott might grab his first Cup win; only to have something happen and he would finish second.  At Martinsville with a chance to automatically advance to the Chase finale' at Homestead; he was leading with three laps to go when Denny Hamlin drove into the back end of Elliott's car and put him into the wall. Two weeks later Hamlin had the better car and Elliott and Hamlin tangled again causing a flat on Hamlin's car which later led to Hamlin crashing. Elliott managed to finish fifth in the points standings.  At the end of the 2017 season

Chase is following in his famous Fathers foot-steps in one stat he'd rather NOT have.  Chase has seven second place finishes without a win.  His Dad Bill has the record with eight seconds before his first win.  For 2018 Elliott will be with Hendrick Motorsports; but will switch to the #9 that his Dad made famous.  History will record that Chase Elliott won his first NASCAR Cup Series race on August 5, 2018; by a whopping 7.560 seconds over reigning champion Martin Truex Jr. That description, however, doesn’t do justice to Elliott’s magnificent drive over the final 32 laps of Sunday’s Go Bowling at the Glen, with Truex hounding him every inch of the way before running out of fuel with two

corners left.  Elliott started third after a strong qualifying run and ran up front all day. Kyle Busch was the heavy favorite to win; but Elliott hounded him during the second stage of the race and finally made the move to get the lead. Elliott easily pulled away and won the second stage. Kyle Busch got back around Chase a few laps after the final stage starts; and Denny Hamlin also led a lap. A yellow flew and on the days final pit stops both Hamlin and Busch had issues. Busch had problems getting fuel into his car; and Hamlin had a air hose break. This forced both drivers to pit a second time and putting them far back in the field. Meanwhile, Martin Truex had found his way up front and was right behind Elliott. Chase made a great drive the final 32 laps keeping Truex behind him to claim the corners left.  Elliott started third after a strong qualifying run and ran up front all day. 2019 Talladega Cup win

Petty Enterprises’ 268 wins. It was only fitting for Chase to win this race. He had finished second on eight occasions before this win. His father Bill Elliott ALSO finished second eight times before his first Cup win; and his first win also came on a road course (Riverside).  Chase's first win would come in his 99th start. He would add another win at Dover and another at Kansas before the year ended. He missed making the final race for the Championship at Phoenix when he was caught up in a crash initiated by Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin. He ended up sixth in the points and also won Most Popular Driver. This made 28 seasons in a row that an Elliott or

an Earnhardt had won the award.  Chase had a season in 2019; much like the one in 2018.  He ran competitive but wasn't able to be dominant and have a shot at a win.   Finally at Talladega he broke through and got his first win of the year edging out team mate Alex Bowman. Seven of his first fourteen starts resulted in Top 10 finishes; while twelve finish were inside the top 15. Then he hit a slump beginning at Kansas where he ran eight races in a row without a top ten finish and only two inside the top 20.   Then when Watkins Glen rolled round, everyone wondered if he could suddenly run up front and win like he did the previous season.  He was impressive and won the pole; then went on to lead 80 laps and once again outran Martin Truex to grab the win.  In the first round of the Chase he was impressive and again ran well on the Roval at

Charlotte.  On a restart he was leading and went into turn one too fast and completely blew the corner.  He piled head first into a thick tire barrier and it cushioned his car so well it only suffered minor damage.  He got going again and came storming through the field to regain the lead and get the win.  Good runs in round two of the Chase saw him advance to the third round and at that point the wheels fell off of the 2019 season.  At Martinsville he blew a motor and practice and had to start last.  He marched through the field and was in the Top 10 by lap 75.  Then during a

yellow flag pit stop the car broke an axle and as the race restarted he was still sitting on pit road.  He eventually lost 55 laps and finished 36th.  The following week at Texas on lap nine he spun out in turn two and got some damage.  This time he finished 32nd and now was in a must win situation going to Phoenix.  At Phoenix, he qualified sixth and had a car good enough to win.  He finished second in stage one and third in stage two.  His car got better as the run went on and there was a real possibility he might win.  Then on lap 167 he suffered a flat tire and crashed heavily into the wall ending his day and his shot at the Championship.  He ended up finishing tenth in the season points standings.  2020 was a good year for Elliott; but it got off to a slow start with a 17th at Daytona and 26th at Las Vegas.  However he finished 4th; 7th and 4th the next three races before looking like he was going to win at Darlington.  Rain was in the area but Elliott pitted anyway.  He now had new tires and was storming through the field; he passed Kyle Busch to move into second place and would have easily bypassed the leader the next lap who was still on old tires.  Busch accidently got into the back of Elliott and he spun and crashed out.  Mere minutes later it started

raining and the race was over.  So that was a win that got away.  The very next race was the Coke 600 and he had a strong car all day.  Two days before he had claimed the win in the Truck Series.  Late in the Cup race he was leading and as he was coming to take the white flag the yellow flag flew and the race went into overtime.  Elliott's crew chief chose to leave him out; and most all the other lead laps cars pitted.  When the final green flaw that left Elliott a sitting duck. Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski both passed Elliott as he crossed the finish line third.  Johnson was disqualified post race and Keselowski got the win.  Race win #2 had gotten away.  But he redeemed himself in the second race at Charlotte three days later when he won for the first time in 2020.  Due to the Covid

pandemic NASCAR had to scramble to fill race dates; and for only the second time ever, the All Star race was held somewhere OTHER than Charlotte.  That race was at Atlanta; and was won by Chase's dad Bill Elliott.  Now this race was a Bristol; and once again an Elliott claimed the win as Chase grabbed the win.  As mentioned; NASCAR had to scramble to fill the race schedule; and for the first time ran the road course at Daytona Speedway.  Having won both road course events in 2019, Elliott was the favorite to win this event; and he didn't disappoint.  In the Chase he ran OK; but during round two; he stepped up and defended his win there from 2019 to advance to round three.  A bad race at Texas as a long shot to make the Championship race in Phoenix; but the team stepped up and he led 236 laps at Martinsville to win and put himself into the Championship race at Phoenix.  In that race

the team came prepared to won and Chase had his game face on.  He, Brad Keselowski, and Joey Logano were the class of the field.  It seems like Keselowski and Logano was quick on a short run; but Elliott had a great long run car.  The last green flag flew on lap 201 of the 312 lap event.  Elliott led all but nine of those laps and won the race and the Championship by almost three seconds over Keselowski.  This made he and his father Bill only the third father/son combination to win the Cup Championship.  Elliott was back in the #9 in 2021 with Alan Gustafson as he crew chief.  Chase had a worse year than many anticipated he would.  The fact that Rick Hendrick hired Kyle Larson to be Elliott’s team mate probably took away a couple wins Chase could have earned.  Chase had six second place finishes; four of those behind Larson.  Still, it was a good year for Elliott as he had two wins; 15 Top 5's

and 21 Top 10 finishes.  By all accounts a good season; just not as good as 2020, when he won the Championship. He got another shot to win the Championship in 2021, but as they raced at Phoenix it turned out he and Larson had good long run cars; while Truex and Hamlin had good short run cars.  So, it would come down to the final run of the day.  A yellow flew with 29 laps to go and everyone pitted.  Larson’s crew got him out first.  When the green flag flew; Larson squirted away while the others battled for second.  Larson won and Elliott ended up fourth.  Both will be back to drive for HMS in 2022. Elliott also made one Xfinity start

in 2021.  He filled in for Michael Annett as he had an illness.  Elliott started 25th and finished fourth in the Indy Grand Prix.  He also made a start in the Truck Series driving the #24 GMS owned vehicle at Texas where he started 22nd and came home second.  In 2022, Chase had a good season that could have been an even better season.  Before the season even began, he signed a five year extension with Hendrick Motor Sports that will keep him with the team through 2027.  He began the season with a 10th place finish at Daytona.  NASCAR was still figuring out the new Next-Gen car and the car had issues with flat tires.  If you had a single flat tire; the car was almost undrivable.  If you had two flats; say after a spin; the car sat so low to the ground a wrecker would have to

come tow you back to the pits; usually costing the driver two laps.  That happened to Chase at Fontana; leaving him finishing 26th; two laps down.  After that Chase posted  good finish after good finish.  The next ten races he finished 14th or better in all of them.  He got his first win at Dover.  He had a rough patch, where he finished outside the top 20 the next three races.  A good run at Sonoma saw him finish eighth; and he won again the next week at Nashville.  A second place finish the following race at  Elkhart Lake was followed by another win at Atlanta.  It was satisfying to get his first win at his home track; but about an hour away from Dawsonville.  Chase joined his father Bill Elliott in becoming only the second father-son tandem to win at Atlanta (joining Dale Earnhardt & Dale Earnhardt Jr.), and also joining his father in becoming the only two Georgia born racecar drivers to win at Atlanta

Motor Speedway.  The next week he was second at  Loudon; and he would again win the next race at Pocono; a race in which he finished third - but saw both Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch disqualified' leaving Elliott with the win.  A five race streak where he finished no worse than second, saw him take the lead in the regular season points standings.  The road course race at Indianapolis saw him run well; but he got spun out late in the race that relegated him to a 16th place finish.  He should have won Watkins Glen; but on the final restart; he was run wide by his team mate Kyle Larson in turn one and almost caused Chase to crash.  Chase managed to rally back and finish fourth.  He went on to be the regular season champion.  When the play-offs started; Chase didn't see anything come easy.  The first race of each round he seemed to be snake bit.  At Darlington; his car had poor handling; and he just lost

control in turn one about lap 110; and what looked like a harmless spin, ended up with him falling out and finishing last, when Chase Briscoe could not avoid piling into him.  He run well the next two races to make it into the next round.  In the round of 12; Chase again had bad luck at Texas as he crashed out while leading just past half way.  Several cars had issues with unexpected tire failures that day; as tires would just go flat with no warning.  Several were like Chase, and leading at the time it happened.  He rebounded with a win the next week at Talladega; propelling him into the round of eight.  He was driving away from the field with four laps to at the Roval the following week; when a yellow flew with less than four laps to go.  He had the race in the bag if not for the yellow.  On the restart,  someone got into him and spun him out, costing him his chance at the win.  As with the first two round of the play-offs; Chase has a bad first race in the round of eight.  He runs about 20th all day; no able to be

competitive.  He ended up 21st at the checkers, and all his bonus points he had to begin the race were now gone.  Joey Logano won the race to lock up one spot of the final four.  His car was better; but still not capable of running for the win.  He finished 14th and gave himself a little breathing room, as non-finalist Kyle Larson won, and kept Ross Chastain from locking up a second spot to run for the Championship at Phoenix.  At Martinsville he qualified second and just needed a clean race, and some stage points, to advance to the championship round.  He finished second in both the first and second stage, and all but had a spot locked up by mid-race.  At Phoenix when the team rolled in; they had high hopes.  Chase qualified fifth, but the car wasn't near fast enough to keep up with a speedy Joey Logano.  The team kept working on the car every pit stop, and seemed to make it better and better.  By the end

of stage two it was beginning to look promising.  As the race restarted, Logano was in the lead; with Elliott lined up right behind; and Chastain was behind Elliott.  Chase moved to go under Logano; but Chastain had already gotten his nose inside Elliott, and around the #9 car went.  He hit the inside wall a glancing blow; but bent the upper control arms which messed up the drivability.  He ended the day running; but two laps down in 28th place.  So; he'll be back in 2023 and try to claim Cup Championship number two.  For the season he had five wins; 12 top five, and 20 top ten finishes.  Chase did make

one NASCAR start outside the Cup Series.  As a warm-up to the upcoming race on the dirt at Bristol; Chase drove in the truck race at Bristol.  He started seventh and finished seventh in the #7.  He also took to racing some midget cars and run in the 2022 Chili Bowl to help improve his dirt racing skills.  In 2023, for the first time since he won on the Cup circuit, Chase Elliott failed to get a win.  After being involved in a crash at Daytona, Elliott almost pulled off the win at Fontana.  During the time between Fontana and Las Vegas went snow-boarding and had an accident and broke his leg.  That put him on the side-lines for the next six races.  Needless to say he was so far behind in points it appeared he would have to claim a win during the regular season to make the play offs.  He ran well

when he got back behind the wheel, having finishes of 10th, 12th, 11th, seventh, and third.  It seemed the old Chase was back and on the prowl.  But in the Coke 600 Denny Hamlin put chase into the outside wall coming off turn four and as Chase bounced off the wall, he hit Hamlin.  Elliott went on to finish 34th.  After Bubba Wallace has bounced off the wall the year before and chased Larson down the track and crashed him;…  NASCAR looked at this as something “similar” and had to penalize Chase or be accused of being inconsistent in their rulings.  So Chase was suspended for a race.  When he returned he again had strong performances.  He was fifth at Sonoma, fourth at Nashville and third at Chicago.  The next four races he had no finish worse than 13th At Michigan he crashes and finished 36th and there was now only three races remaining in the regular season. He needed to win to make the play offs.  He almost got it at Indy on the road course where he finished second.  He was running near the front the next race at Watkins Glen when his crew mis-figured his gas mileage and he ran out of gas on the back straight.  He finished 32nd.  At Daytona he finished fourth.  He only missed making the play offs by about 40 points.  This after missing seven races; running out of gas at Watkins Glen and by being sit down by NASCAR on a questionable call.  He ran pretty good all year; but it wasn’t the usual Chase; always up front, racing for the win.  For the year he had seven Top 5 and 15 Top 10’s in 29 starts.  He also made starts in the other two premier divisions of NASCAR.  He made one start in the Xfinity series.  It came at Pocono where he would start 13th and finish third.  He made a Truck series start at Daytona.  He drove for Bill McAnally starting 14th and finishing 10th.  He’ll be back at HMS in 2024; looking to get back in the win column and claim another Championship.  For his short career he has made 286 starts, has 18 wins; 93 top five, and 152 top ten finishes.  Of course, he was the Cup champion in 2020.  He has made 83 Xfinity starts has five wins and was the Xfinity Champion in 2014.  He has 18 starts in the Truck series with three wins.  Some info from Wikipedia.
