FONDA  SPEEDWAY   -   FONDA  NY

The track opened in 1953 as a half-mile dirt oval which it remains to this date.  From 1957 until 1968 the track was home to an 1/8 mile drag strip that ran in the middle of the track's infield.  Shirley Muldowney made her debut on the drag strip.  She remembers it as "it really was... dangerous". "That strip was deadly, deadly.  You would go down the center of that dirt oval and when you would sail off that strip onto the oval, all four wheels would leave the ground," she said.  NASCAR came to the track in 1955.  Junior Johnson would beat Tim Flock by more than a lap to get the win. Then it wasn't until 1966 when the Cup stars returned.  David Pearson and Richard Petty would battle it out for the win with Pearson getting the checkered flag.  Petty

would get his time in victory circle in 1967 when he outran Bobby Allison by more than a lap.  Petty would win again the next year when the final Cup race was held. Buddy Baker would finish second and Allison was third; all on the lead lap.  Series who have competed there include the World of Outlaws, Lucas Oil Late Models, IMCA, various Sprint car and Modified series.  Also, the AAA Championship and Midget cars among many other Series.  NASCAR Truck series regular Stewart Friesen was the tracks Modified Champion 2012-2015.  In 2022 the track will run weekly divisions of Modifieds, Crate 602 Sportsman, Limited Sportsman, Pro Stocks and Four Cylinders.
