GAMECOCK  SPEEDWAY   -   SUMTER  SC

The Speedway was opened in 1957 and is billed as the oldest continuously running dirt track in SC.  It currently operates under the name as Sumter Speedway and runs weekly races in Street Stock, Stock V8, Extreme 4, Mod 4, Super Street and Crate Late Model divisions.  The NASCAR Truck Series made one stop at this speedway, and it came in 1960.  Prior to this NASCAR ran ten Limited Sportsman races.  Ralph Earnhardt won four of them.  Joe Weatherly and Johnny King won twice each.  The Cup race was in September 1960.  Ned Jarrett would start on the front row and lead all 200 laps around the 1/4 mile dirt oval.  He would edge out David Pearson for the win.  Junior Johnson would finish third, followed by G.C Spencer and Lee Petty. No records could be found after that, up until 2000.  Since then, along with the weekly events; the track has hosted such series as the Hav-A_Tampa Dirt Series, O'Reilly United Sprint Cars, POWRi Southern State Midgets, South Eastern Modifieds, and many others.
