HAYLOFT  SPEEDWAY   -   AUGUSTA  GA

This was one of two tracks located in Augusta GA.  It was a 1/2 mile dirt oval that started holding major events in 1948.  It hosted the NASCAR Modifieds in 1948.  The race in 1948 was held on March 29th with Bob Flock winning the 50 lap feature.  The Hayloft is in the NASCAR record books for hosting the sixth Cup race in the country in 1952.  Over the years racing has continued at this location under the names of Augusta Speedway, Gordon Park Speedway, Classic South Speedway and Augusta Motor Speedway.  The 1952 race would be held in June and was scheduled for 200 laps.  Tommy Moon would

start on the pole, but before the end of lap one, Gober Sosebee would be in the lead.  He would lead every lap until the rain moved in and the race was called official and SoSebee was declared the winner.  Moon would go on to finish second; his best career finish.  The rest of the top five finishers were David Ezell, June Cleveland and Jerry Wimbish; it was career best finishes for all of them.  The track received a facelift in 1979 and major renovation in 1999 when operated as the Silver Eagle Speedway.  In the last couple of years additional improvements were made and raced under the name of New Gordon Park Speedway.
