JOE  LEE  JOHNSON   -   09/11/1929 - 05/26/2005

was a NASCAR Cup Series driver who won the inaugural World 600 in 1960. The race was postponed three weeks due to construction delays.  Johnson would start 20th and not take the lead until 48 laps to go; and hold on to take the checkered flag.  During the race, Don O'Dell's Pontiac crashed into the driver's door of Lenny Page's Chevy.  Lenny Page, who was lucky to survive the crash due to the safety systems at that time, was near death afterward, but reporter Chris Economaki rushed to the scene and aided Page with CPR until safety crews arrived.  He was later credited with saving Lenny's life.  Jack Smith was the dominant car in the race as he led 198 laps; but fell out with 48 laps to go due to having a hole knocked in his gas tank.  Interestingly enough there were six cars disqualified in post race tech.  Among them were Richard and Lee Petty, Bob Welborn and Junior Johnson.  Time to run the 600 miles took over 5 1/2 hours.  Johnson only competed in a hand full of CUP events over seven years.  The most races he ran was in 1960, when he raced in 22 of 44 events, and finished 13th in the season points.  He won two events, and posted ten top fives in 55 races.  The other race he won was at Nashville in 1959.  He was much more dominant on this day as he led 83 of 300 laps,

beating Larry Frank by three laps.  He was also the 1959 NASCAR Convertible Division champion.  He ran 14 of 15 events that season, winning back to back races at Champion Speedway; and Richmond Speedway.  That year he had seven Top 5 finishes, and nine Top 10's.  The only times he finished worse than eighth was when he had mechanical issues.  Johnson's final Cup start wasat Nashville in 1962. He is no relation to any of the other 'Johnsons' listed here.    Some info from Wikipedia
