KATHERINE  ANNE  LEGGE   -   07/12/1980

(home - Guilford, ENG)
A British professional auto racing driver.  On August 2018, Legge joined JD Motorsports for her NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, driving the #15 Chevrolet Camaro.  After running around the Top 15 all day; she erupted a motor with less than 10 laps to go.  As part of a two-race schedule with the team, she would also compete at Road America two weeks later.  She ran very competitive sometimes as high as third.  While she was running near the front she got tagged going into the corner and spun out.  She was only able to recover to finish and finish 14th.  She was asked about her starts and NASCAR and if she would be interested in driving other events; and she stated "Sure I'd love to drive on an oval track" - SO we'll see when she may get behind the wheel again.  Prior to her first NASCAR start Legge had proven herself as a formidable competitor.  Born in Guildford, UK on July 12th,

Katherine began her racing career in karting in several developmental open-wheel series in Britain, including Formula Ford, Formula Renault and Formula Three before moving to the US to compete in Formula Atlantic.  In 2005, Legge competed in the Toyota Atlantic Championship with Polestar Motor Racing. She won the series opener at Long Beach in her first career Atlantic start. In doing so, she became the first woman to win a developmental open-wheel race in North America.  Legge went on to win her second and third races of the season at Edmonton and San Jose.  She finished the season 3rd in the championship with three wins and five podiums.  She also received the Toyota Atlantic BBS Rising Star 2005 Award.  She also

received the 2005 RACER Magazine "Most Promising Road Racer of The Year" award, a title that had been awarded every year since 2002 to A. J. Allmendinger.  In November 2005, Legge became  the first woman to test a Formula One car since Sarah Fisher in 2002, when she tested on the November 22nd and 23rd of the Minardi team's final testing session at Vallelunga.  The second day she completed 27 laps with a best lap time of 1:21.176.  She was also the first woman to test an A1 Grand Prix car, on December 9-11 2005 with A1 Team Great Britain.   In the 2005–2006 off-season, Legge tested a Champ Car once for the Rocketsports Racing and twice for PKV Racing.  The following year in February, it was announced that she would drive for PKV Racing in the 2006 Champ Car season.  In June, she became the first woman to lead a lap in series history, leading 12 laps at Milwaukee.  Legge

suffered a violent accident later that year at the Grand Prix of Road America, when the rear wing of her car broke; she was able to walk away from the car unharmed (Crash video here).  At the beginning of the 2008 season, Legge moved to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters series, driving for Colin Kolles' Futurecom TME Audi team.  For 2009 and 2010 she raced for the Abt Sportsline team, who were the 2008 champions.  Also in 2009 she was the only one of the five drivers in the Abt Sportline team using the previous year's car.  In January 2012, Legge signed with Dragon Racing in the IndyCar Series, alongside Frenchman Sébastien Bourdais.  Legge reached a two-year agreement with sponsor TrueCar as part of their Women Empowered campaign.  However, since the Lotus engines were shown

to be uncompetitive, the team made a change to Chevrolet engines.  But team owner Jay Penske could only procure one Chevrolet engine lease agreement for the team, so they could only enter one car per race after Indianapolis. Therefore, for the remainder of 2012, Dragon entered Bourdais at the road and street courses, and Legge at oval tracks.  Legge finished 26th in points, competing in ten of the 15 races, and had a best finish of ninth in the 2012 MAVTV 500 IndyCar World Championships at Auto Club Speedway.  2013 saw Legge leave IndyCar to join the DeltaWing program in the United SportsCar Championship.  Legge competed in the 2014 and 2015 seasons for DeltaWing.  In 2014 Legge moved to race the WeatherTech

Sports Car Series in the GTD division.  She ran part time in the series from 2014-2016 posting four Top 5's.  She went to work driving for Michael Shank racing and raced full time in the Series in 2017.  There she posted two wins grabbing the checkered flag at Belle Isle, MI and Watkins Glen, NY. Unfortunately, she had three DNF's and could only finish sixth in points.  As 2018 started, she repeated her win at Belle Isle, and just lost out in a close season long points battle in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar GTD class.  In 2020 Legge moved to the new "GEAR" Racing Lamborghini alongside co-driver Christina Nielsen.  GEAR Stands for Girl Empowerment Around Racing, and it is the organizations mission to inspire girls to be strong, smart

and bold in racing and in life. They went on to finish ninth in the IMSA points.  In 2021 and 2022 she drove for Team Hardpoint, still competing in the GTD class; now wheeling a Porshe 911.  She looks to be back behind the wheel of an IMSA car again in 2023.  She is entered in the Rolex 24 driving for Gradient Racing in the #63 Acura.  In 2023, Legge raced full time in the WeatherTech Sports Car series.  She and her partners raced in the GTD Class.  They started off with a fourth place finish in class in the Rolex 24

at Daytona.  They had two sixth place finishes (Watkins Glen and Lime Rock) and two tenth place finishes (Elkhart Lake and Virginia International Raceway).  In her free time she also made a foray in the Indy Series; running the Indy 500; and also run a race in the Xfinity Series at Elkhart Lake.  At Indy she was involved in a lap 41 crash, and in the Xfinity race she fell out after only nine laps with a fuel pump issue.   For the Indy 500 in 2023, her single-lap PPG Armed Forces Qualifying run of 231.596 bested Simona De Silvestro's 2021 record, and her four-lap average of 231.070 bested Sarah Fisher's 2002 record.  Some info from Wikipedia
