LINCOLN  SPEEDWAY   -   NEW  OXFORD  PA

This track is a 1/2 mile dirt oval still in operation today.  The first NASCAR care was held here in June of 1955. Junior Johnson and Fonty Flock started on the front row. Fonty led the first 15 laps before he fell out with brake issues.  Tim Flock then took the lead and led for 83 laps, at which time Johnson would make the pass and drive away to a two lap win.  Tim finished second, followed by Buck Baker; Jim Reed and Nace Mattingly.  The following year Herb Thomas led 138 and with 19 laps to go had an issue which relegating him to finishing fourth, five laps behind. Buch Baker had a battle on his hands the final 19 laps as he and Jim Paschal battled for the win.  Baker would win by one car length.  Lee Petty was third, also on the lead lap.  Baker would win again in 1957, but it was a battle as the top five

finishers all ended up on the lead lap.  Baker was followed across the line by Fireball Roberts, Paul Goldsmith, Marvin Panch and Speedy Thompson.  Baker would be only two time winner here at Lincoln.  Marvin Panch would win the following race; and Lee Petty won in 1958.  The series didn't race here again until 1964; a race which saw David Pearson cross the finish line first 11 second ahead of Richard Petty.  In 1965, Petty would be back and looked to have the best car as he led the first 78 laps after starting from the pole.  But, his suspension failed, and he was out finishing 19th.  From there Dick Hutcherson proceeded to put a butt whooping on the field as he took the win over eight laps

ahead of second place finisher G.C. Spencer.  Pearson was third.  The Convertibles also ran here once; it happened in 1956.  Curtis Turner would start first, lead all 200 laps and beat Joe Weatherly by more than two laps.  Currently the speedway kicks off the season early.  The annual "Ice Breaker" event is held in February.  The track races weekly, and various classes of Sprint cars are run 410 (ci); along with 358 (ci) and 305 (ci) sized motors most evenings.  The World of Outlaws, ARDC Midgets, and Super Late Model and Super Sportsman series also run special events.
