MONTGOMERY  SPEEDWAY   -   MONTGOMERY  AL

The track opened in 1953, and is the oldest operating race track in Alabama.  It was (and remains) a 1/2 mile oval.  This track was the first paved track in Alabama; paved in 1956.  NASCAR held six 200 lap Cup races there and one convertible race.  The first race was in 1955; a year which NASCAR run here twice.  At that time the track was dirt; and both races would be won by Tim Flock.  When the Cup cars returned in 1956 the track had been paved, and Marvin Panch beat Buck Baker by over a lap.  Bill Amick, Speedy Thompson and Lee Petty made up the top five finishers.  There was also a convertible race here in 1956. It was also won by

Panch as he beat Bob Welborn.  NASCAR didn't return to race here until 1967; and by then a whole new group of drivers had made their way onto the scene.  That year Jim Paschal would out-duel Richard Petty to get the win by a half a lap.  The next year, Petty and Bobby Allison would battle for the win.  They were the only two on the lead lap when the checkered flag waved with Petty crossing the line first.  Bobby Isaac was third four laps behind.  The final Cup race here would be in 1969.  It was race number two in a long 54 race season.  Once again Petty and Allison would wage battle; but this time  Allison would go to victory lane as he edged out Petty by a scant four feet.  James Hylton was third five laps behind.  Huffman Motor Sports purchased the facility on February 5, 1999, and the track was extensively renovated and lighted in 1999.  In November 2004, Bill Manful bought Montgomery Motor Speedway and in 2006, leased the track to Hyundai, a local car manufacturer, to allow the facility to

become a storage site.  In 2008, Bobby and Mark Knox of Clanton, Alabama laid claim to the speedway when they purchased it in an auction from Manful.  They opened it as The New Montgomery Motor Speedway, LLC.  The track still host racing twice a month running several divisions.  They include Pro Late Models, Outlaw Late Models, Late Model Sportsman, Street Stock, and Renegades.  The facility also host the Alabama 200 Pro Late Model event and the Modifieds of Mayhem along with Demolition Derbys.
