MORRISTOWN  SPEEDWAY   -   MORRISTOWN  NJ

Morristown Raceway opened in 1950 as a half mile dirt speedway track hosting stock car racing.  It hosted the Atlantic Stock Car Racing Club it's first year for 17 races. Nelson Applegate and Bobby Courtwright were strong competitors there as of the 17 races, Applegate won five and Courtwright four.  In 1951 the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman (now Xfinity) ran here on a regular basis.  They had expanded and had 29 events that year.  Wally Campbell was strong racer as he won 11 time.  In only its second year of operation the venue was hosting NASCAR Cup events.  The first Cup race was held here that season.  Tim and Fonty Flock had a good battle until Fonty crashed on lap 89 while leading and was out for the day.  Tim went

on to lead the rest of the laps and get the win over Lee Petty.  The following year the roles were reversed as Petty got the win and Flock was second.  This would also mark the final career Cup start for Louise Smith.  NASCAR's Modified division raced here regular starting in 1952 and lasted through 1954.  1953 would see Dick Rathman get the win by more than a lap over Herb Thomas and Lee Petty.  Thomas was second again the next year here, as Buck Baker would beat him to the line for the win.  The final Cup race at the track saw Tim Flock win for the second time as he bested the field by more than two laps.  Lee Petty was second and Dave Terrell third.  In this event Flock jumped out to the lead and held the spot for the first 150 laps.  Then he had a flat and lost three laps; meanwhile Junior Johnson assumed the lead.  As it looked like Johnson was about to cruise to the victory; he too had

a flat with 10 laps to go.  Flock was able to bypass Johnson as he sat in the pits and go on to get the win.
