JOHN  HUNTER  NEMECHEK   -   06/11/1997

a native of Mooresville, North Carolina; He is the son of Joe Nemechek.  Joe's brother; John Nemechek was killed in a racing accident in a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at Homestead-Miami Speedway, at the time Joe's wife was pregnant.  In honor of his brother, and in his memory, Joe and his wife named their child John Hunter Nemechek.  John Hunter began his racing career at the age of 5, competing in go-karts, quarter midget cars and in dirt bike competition.  He moved up to stock car competition in 2010, competing in the Allison Legacy Series with sponsorship from England Stove Works.  In 2012, Nemechek moved up to late model and super late model competition, competing in the Champion Racing Association Super Series and American Speed Association Midwest Tour; he also competed in the World Series of Asphalt at New Smyrna Speedway during speed weeks.  Nemechek won praise from Cup Series driver Kyle Busch following a CRA Super Series race in which both drivers competed.  In June 2012, Nemechek won the pole

for the Howie Lettow Memorial 150, an ASA Midwest Tour event, at the Milwaukee Mile; on an interesting note; he was scheduled to take a driver's education course the following week as he had just passed his fifteenth birthday and did not yet have his drivers license.  In 2013, Nemechek moved to competing in the Southern Super Series as well as in selected races in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, starting with the UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona International Speedway in February.  In late 2013, he made his debut in the NASCAR Truck Series, driving the #22 Toyota for SWM-NEMCO Racing.  He competed in two events, with a best finish of 16th.  In January 2014,

Nemechek announced he would be competing in ten Camping World Truck Series events during the 2014 season.  After the season ended, he won the 300-lap Snowball Derby.  On September 19, 2015, 16 years to the day after Joe Nemechek won his first Cup race, John Hunter Nemechek won his first Truck Series race at Chicagoland.  On November 29, Nemechek was voted the Most Popular Driver for the 2015 season in the Truck Series.  In 2016, Nemechek won at Atlanta (pictured).  At Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 250, Nemechek and Cole Custer were battling for the lead when Nemechek bumped Custer before running both Custer and himself off-road, pinning

Custer to the wall. Before the winner was declared, Nemechek was tackled by Custer; Nemechek would be named the winner.  Nemechek posted an additional second place finishes at Martinsville and Kentucky.  He had five Top 5 finishes and 11 Top 10 finishes in 2016.  John Hunter raced for his Dad, Joe in 2017 and saw him claim two wins and make the Chase.  However he missed the final race to win the Championship and finished eighth in points. John Hunter split time between the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series.  in 2018; running 18 events in both series. In the Truck Series he posted a win a at Martinsville; and added five additional Top 5's. He also drove the #42 machine for Chip Ganassi and posted a win at Kansas; and six additional Top 5's; finishing 13th in the points.  It was announced that he would be driving full time in the Xfinity series in the GMS #23 in 2019.  That seat became available when Spencer Gallagher retired.  John Hunters Xfinity Series results were up and down.  He finished second early in the season at Las Vegas and had third place finishes at Iowa and

Bristol.  But between those races he would seem to over drive the car and crash himself out of the race.  He managed to put together enough good runs that he made it into the Chase via points.  He seemed to right the ship towards the end of the season. The last six races he had no finish worse than eighth.  He made it to the second round of the Chase; but missed advancing any further than that. Meanwhile Nemechek made his first career Cup start at Texas when he filled in for full time driver Matt Tifft.  Tifft had passed out at the track for an unknown reason  and Nemechek was tabbed to be his fill in that week.  He drove to an impressive 21st place finish, and owner Bob Jenkins was so impressed he asked him to fill in for Tifft the remaining two races.  He finished 27th and 23rd those two events.  It was an impressive debut for a guy that seemed to spin himself out for no reason in Xfinity races.

Tifft's health was up in the air as of the end of 2019 and he and FRM parted ways as Tifft intended to focus on his health and could not commit to a full-time 2020 schedule.  John Hunter Nemechek filled the seat and run for Rookie of the Year honors in 2020.  John Hunter and his dad Joe set a NASCAR record the next to last race of the season at Phoenix.  They become the first father / son combo to run all three NASCAR series races in the same weekend.  Nemechek ran the full season in 2020 driving for Front Row Motorsports and owner Bob Jenkins.  He also ran for Rookie of the Year in a very tough class of rookies that included Tyler Reddick; Christopher Bell; and Cole Custer.  He had three finishes in the top ten with a best finish of

eighth.  Nemechek announced after the season that he wouldn't return to drive the #38 in 2021.  On November 23 it was announced that Nemechek would drop back to run full time in the Truck series in 2021, driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports.  He won five times in the first 13 races; twice outdueling the boss, Kyle Busch, to get the win.  After that he would still run well, but go winless.  He ran well in the Chase and make it all the way to the Championship race at Phoenix.  He struggled all day and never was much of a

factor.  He ended up finishing seventh overall, and third in the points.  He’ll was back behind the controls of the #4 truck driving for KBM in 2022.  Also, in 2021 he made five Xfinity starts; and in one he drove the #54 “All Star” at Texas and claimed the win.  Nemechek had a busy season in 2022.  He raced full time in the Truck Series where he raced for the Championship.  He also ran 11 races in the Xfinity Series, and made one start in the Cup cars.  His start in the Cup cars came at Homestead where he filled in for Bubba Wallace; after he was suspended for one race for intentionally wrecking Kyle Larson.  He made 11 starts in the Xfinity series splitting time between running three races

in JGR's #18 car; and eight races for owner Sam Hunt.  Hunt is in the process of putting together a stout little race team for a single car team.  In the runs Nemechek made for Hunt, he finished second at Richmond; fourth and ninth at Darlington; and fifth at Phoenix.  His other runs were all 16th or better.  In the Truck Series, Nemechek got off to a slow start.  Finishes of 24th or worse opened the first three races of 2022.  But he got the Kyle Busch Motorsports truck humming at COTA where he finished second.  He followed that with a fourth at Martinsville; and a third at Bristol.  He got his first win of the year the next week at Darlington.  He added three top six finishes the next three races, giving him seven races in a row where he finished

no worse than sixth.  He received damage at Gateway and fell out finishing 35th, before he had a stretch where only one finish was worse than tenth.  He ran well in the playoffs; and got another win at Kansas in the round of 12; advancing him into the semi-final round.  He had bad luck the next three races finishing 12th; 24th and 35th; failing to make the championship four.  At Phoenix as the season closed he posted a fourth place finish.  Issue's with Kyle Busch and JGR not being able to find sponsorship for his Cup ride; carried over to Kyle Busch's truck team.  Busch has always fielded Toyota's since he drove a Toyota in the Cup Series.  Now, Busch will be driving a Chevy in 2023; and is swapping his trucks to Chevy also.  Chase Purdy has been tabbed to drive the #4 that Nemechek drove in 2022.  Kyle Busch will run a few races in the #51 and Jack Wood most of the rest.  In December it was announced

that Nemechek would drive the #20 car full time for JGR in the Xfinity Series.  Nemechek had a very good year behind the wheel of the #20 JGR Toyota.  He almost won as they opened the season at Daytona; finishing second behind Austin Hill.  But the next race at Fontana, Nemechek would lead 49 laps, outdistancing Sam Mayer by about a second for the first win of the season.  His first five races, his worst finish was eighth, but still left him third in points.  He

would win again at Martinsville.  When the Xfinity series made it’s second trip to Atlanta; Nemechek found himself in victory lane.  He followed that win with another the next week at New Hampshire.  Three weeks later he was in the winner's circle again at Michigan.  He closed out the regular season with a win at Kansas.  When the Chase kicked off, he was third at Bristol, and them locked himself into the next round with a win at Texas.  Good finishes in the Round of 8 put him into the race for the Championship at Phoenix.  He had a strong car and looked to be the car to beat.  He was first at the end of stage 1, and running third at the end of stage 2.  He was leading as late as lap 184.  The final yellow came out on lap 197. On the restart, Nemechek had a shot to win, but his car pushed up going

into turn 1 and a whole host of cars swept by him.  He ended up finishing 28th and fourth in the points.  For the season he had seven wins, 17 Top 5 and 24 Top 10’s.  Nemechek also made two starts in the Truck series.  The first one came at Las Vegas where he fell out after 98 laps finishing 31st.  His other start was more successful.  It came at Atlanta.  He started in 24th but stormed through the field.  He was running third by the end of stage 2, and went on to lead 53 laps.  He finished third behind winner Christian Eckes and Nick Sanchez.  He also made one start in the Cup series.  It would come late in the year when he drove the #42 for Legacy Motor Club.  He started 24th but was involved in a crash and finished 32nd.  At the end of 2023, Nemechek was named to drive full time in the Cup series for Legacy.  Some info from Wikipedia.
