NEW  ASHEVILLE  SPEEDWAY   -   ASHEVILLE  NC

The New Asheville Speedway was a 4/10 mile short track paved oval circuit that was built over the west end of the Owen Field runway in 1962.  The first Major events saw NASCAR's Limited sportsman begin running there is in 1960 and run there most years through 1981.  The first Cup race was in 1962 and was 250 laps.  Jack Smith covered the distance the fastest, beating Joe Weatherly by a over lap. For 1963 the track size was reduced to 1/3 mile; but the distance was increased to 300 laps.  Ned Jarrett would beat Richard Petty to take the win.  1964 saw Jarrett best Petty again. Junior Johnson started on the pole in 1965; led all 300 laps and beat Jarrett by four laps.  David Pearson would win in 1966; and 1967 saw Jim Paschal end up in the winners circle.  Richard Petty would claim the win in the final two races as the curtain fell on Cup racing at the speedway in 1971.  Over the years the track hosted such series as the Budweiser Late Models; All Pro Trucks; Daytona Dash, and All Pro Super Series.  The track was closed down in 1999 and the venue was turned into a park know as Carrier Park then in 2001 the track was again resealed and is used for cycling.
