NEW  CONCORD  SPEEDWAY   -   CONCORD  NC

With so many race tracks built in Concord NC, it's difficult to track down the correct information to connect to the correct track.  I found a Concord Speedway in Concord NC. This was a 1/2 mile dirt track that hosted three Cup events in the 1962 season.  Jack Smith beat Joe Weatherly in the first event in November 1961; which was actually race #1 of the 1962 season.  The Cup drivers returned in February for the next race.  Joe Weatherly led all 78 laps of the race beating Richard Petty.  The race was called early due to rain.  NASCAR was back in May for a third event.  This one saw the race go the full distance, and Weatherly would beat Cotton Owens by a half lap. No Cup race was held here in 1963; but in 1964 the cars were back.  The distance was lengthened to 250 laps, and when the dust settled, Ned Jarrett had beat Joe Weatherly by 12 seconds.  The Final race was in 1964.  Richard Petty would hold off David Pearson to win by 1/4 of a lap.  The track was located at what is now Poplar Tend Road.  A Housing development is there now.  There is also the new "Concord Speedway was built in 1982 by Henry Furr" which never hosted a Cup race and was recently closed and torn down.
