NEWBERRY  SPEEDWAY   -   NEWBERRY  SC

The track hosted a Cup race in 1957.  It had a "crowd" of only 900 people; setting a record for the smallest attendance for a Cup race ever.  It was in October, race #50 of a long 53 race schedule.  The race was 200 laps around a 1/2 mile dirt oval.  Jack Smith would start on the pole with Johnny Allen along side.  Smith jumped out to lead the first 18 laps, but was then passed by Speedy Thompson who held the point for the next 47 circuits.  Buck Baker would motor past Thompson after that and hold the lead for 17 laps.  But on lap 83, Fireball Roberts would bypass Baker and drive away to win by more than a lap.  Baker would come home second, and the rest of the top five would be Smith, Marvin Panch and Gwyn Staley. Prior to the Cup race;

NASCAR hosted a Late Model Sportsman race there in 1953. J.V. Hamby would win that 35 lapper over Wally Campbell.
