NEWPORT  SPEEDWAY   -   NEWPORT  TN

When the Cup cars raced the this track it was a 1/2 mile dirt track.  The first Cup race was in 1956 and a distance of 200 laps.  Joe Eubanks won the pole, but second place starter Buck Baker jumped into the lead on the first lap.  He would lead the first 149 laps, before Fireball Roberts would pass and go on to take the checkers.  Baker would come home second; while Bill Amick, Joe Weatherly and Herb Thomas made up the top five.  The Cup cars were back in 1957.  Roberts would again go to the winners circle, followed by Marvin Panch, Buck Baker, Jack Smith and Jim Paschal.  That was the only two timea NASCAR would come to the fast little short track.  Other series that have raced here over the years included, ARCA Series; UARA Stars; American Challenge Series; PASS Super Late Models; Southeast Super Truck Series; Super Super Stock Series and others. Newport stopped holding races after the 2017 season.
