NORFOLK  SPEEDWAY   -   NORFOLK  VA

Norfolk Speedway got it's start in the late 1940's.  It was one of three tracks in the Norfolk area.  Princess Anne Speedway also hosted Cup races.  Norfolk was a 4/10 mile dirt oval that held two Cup races, and four convertible events.  The first Cup race was held in August of 1956, at a distance of 250 laps.  Ralph Moody would start out front and jump out to lead the first 100 laps.  Mechanical gremlins popped up as he had an idler arm fail, and he was out by lap 104.  Billy Myers was there to pounce when Moody dropped out and lead the final 150 laps.  He beat Jim Paschal by over a lap white Rex White and Buck Baker nailed down the other two top spots.  In 1957 the Cup cars made their final visit.  Bill Amick won the pole, but was out on lap 29 finishing last.  Buck Baker got the win with Joe Weatherly finishing a lap in arears.  Jim Paschal was third. The convertibles raced there in 1956 in June.  Curtis Turner and Gwyn Staley battled for the win; as Turner pulled off the win.  Staley was second and Bob Welborn third.  The convertible's were there for three visits in 1957.  The first was in April, and just for 200 laps.  Curtis Turner would

beat Joe Weatherly for the win.  The August race was for 250 circuits and Bill Amick would hold off Bob Welborn to take the checkers first.  The final NASCAR race ever held here was in October.  Gwyn Staley was able to get the win in a real fight to the finish.  He was able to hold off Welborn by just three seconds. Possum Jones was third.
