LENNIE  WAYNE  POND   -   08/11/1940 - 02/10/2016

was an American NASCAR driver.  Pond grew up in the Village of Ettrick, Virginia racing on his parents' farm, which Ettrick was home to Pond all his life.  In the mid-1950s. Pond started racing modifieds on dirt tracks, then went to asphalt tracks, then to late-model tracks.  He made his first Cup start in 1969 in race #51 of that years 54 race season. It came at Rockingham NC.  He would start 38th, but his engine would expire after only 73 laps, relegating him to a 34th place finish.  In 1973, Pond started to run Winston Cup races full time.  He posted his first top five finish that year when he finished fourth at Bristol.  He beat out Darrell Waltrip for rookie of the year honors in 1973.  In 1975 he almost pulled off the win at Richmond; finishing second to Darrell Waltrip.  In 1976 he finished second in back to back races; once again at Richmond, then at Ontario CA. 1978 once again saw him finish second at Richmond, and he added another second place finish at Nashville Fairgrounds. Then At Talladega; he won his only career Cup race driving for Ronnie Elder and Harry Ranier.  Pond set a then world record speed of 174.700 miles per hour in winning the 500-mile race.  His last race with Winston Cup was in 1989 at Richmond International Raceway for Junie Donlavey; where he finished in 11th place.  Pond got to run all three tracks here—dirt, asphalt and the new track.  His career totals include 234 career starts, one win, 39 top fives, 88 top tens, five poles, and a best championship finish of 5th in 1976.  Of his 39 Top five 

finishes; seven of them came at Richmond; and five at North Wilkesboro.  Pond later became a car salesman at Heritage Chevrolet in Chester, Virginia.  Pond died February 10, 2016 from complications of cancer.  Some info from Wikipedia.
