DAVID  LEE  RAGAN   -   12/24/1985

an American stock car driver.  Ragan was born in Unadilla, Georgia, the son of former racer Ken Ragan, and began his racing career racing in the Bandolero Series at age 12.  Four years later, he began competing in the Goody’s Dash Series with Cam Strader.  After one year, he moved to the Legends Pro-Division to race for Mark Martin.  He concluded the season by finishing fourth in the point standings.  At age 18, Ragan began racing in the Camping World Truck Series, Xfinity Series, and the ARCA Racing Series.  In 2007, he moved the Cup Series, driving for Roush Fenway Racing.  He drove the AAA sponsored Ford in 2007 and 2008.  In 2009 Roush picked up UPS sponsorship to field Ragan's Ford.  UPS remained the sponsor through 2011 when Ragan left to go to race for owner Bob Jenkins.  Between 2007 and 2011, he recorded 30 Top 10'ss in the series.  On July 2, 2011, David Ragan won his first career NASCAR Cup series

race, the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.  When he was 19 he participated in Roush Racing: Driver X as the co-driver of the number 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford F-150 in the Truck Series.  After participating in 19 events in the series, he recorded one top-five, eight top-ten finishes, and earned one pole position.  Also in 2005, Ragan participated in three Busch Series events, as well as 19 ARCA Racing Series events, where he managed to win one race, and record three pole positions, eight top-five and 11 top-ten finishes.  During the 2006 season, he participated in three Xfinity Series events, and two Cup Series events.  He also participated in 19 Truck Series events, where he recorded two pole positions, one top-five and eight top-ten finishes.  For the 2007 season, Ragan also participated for the NASCAR Rookie of the Year standings in both Cup and Xfinity Series, where he managed to finished second in the Cup Series,

while winning the award in the Xfinity Series.  During the Cup season, Ragan recorded two top-five finishes, with one being in the 2007 Daytona 500, and three Top 10s, finishing 23rd in the point standings.  In 2008, he raced in the Cup Series, the Xfinity Series, as well as in two ARCA Racing Series events.  During 2010, he only participated in the Cup Series.  He recorded only three top-five finishes and finished 24th in points once the season concluded.  In 2011, he began the year almost winning the Daytona 500, but he got penalized for moving lanes before he crossed the line on the restart with two laps to go.  On May 21, 2011, he won the All-Star Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway, passing Brad Keselowski with two laps to go.  He won the Coke Zero 400 on July 2, 2011 for his first career Sprint Cup win.  He was eligible to compete in the "wild card" to get himself into the chase.  After bad finishes a few weeks before the final race before the

chase at Richmond, he finished 4th but was 54 points away from 13th to put himself into a chase position.  At the end of the 2011 season UPS, Ragan’s primary sponsor on the Roush Fenway Racing #6 Ford, announced that they would no longer sponsor the #6 and that the company would scale back it’s racing program next season.  Leaving the #6 team without sponsorship and ultimately forced the camp to shut down, making Roush Fenway Racing a three car team for the 2012 season.  In January 2012, Ragan signed with Front Row Motorsports to drive the #34 Ford for the team in 2012.  Ragan was an upset winner at Talladega in 2013 as he and team mate David Gilliland hooked up and moved their cars to the front on the last lap as Ragan and Gilliland passed Carl Edwards to finish one-two.  This was Ragan's second win so far; and the first win for the fledgling Front Row Motorsports team and owner Bob Jenkins.  Ragan stayed with Jenkins through the 2015 season. Ragan got the opportunity to drive some quality equipment for the first time in his career in 2015.  Due to Kyle Busch's early season injury, Ragan was tabbed to fill the seat in the Joe Gibbs car for nine races. After that he went to the Michael Waltrip

race team; drove the #55 Aaron's car and finished the season there.  Ragan finished a surprising fifth at Martinsville in the Gibbs machine; while his best finish for Waltrip was 12th at Daytona.  The failure to finish well in competitive cars had Ragan looking for a ride going into the 2016 season.  As was suspected, he did find a ride, but in lower level equipment.  He landed at BK Racing driving the #23 Dr Pepper machine; a two car operation with limited funding.  He was only able to post two finishes inside the top 20, and at the end of the season was released for the team.  Ragan returned to Front Row Motorsports for the 2017 season driving the #38 car.  He was only able to post three Top 10 finishes; all coming at

the restrictor plate tracks of Daytona and Talladega.  He had a best finish of 6th at the summer race in Daytona.  He finished 30th in points.  For 2018 he announced he would remain at FRM with a new team mate in Michael McDowell.  He only posted one Top 10 finish (sixth at Talladega) and only had 13 runs inside the Top 20.  For 2019 Ragan remained at Front Row Motorsports; along with team mate Michael McDowell.  Jenkins also purchased a third Charter and fielded a third car; with Matt Tifft at the controls.  Ragan had a strong run at Daytona before a late race accident relegated them to a 30th place finish.  They had a strong qualifying run at Las Vegas; the best start he had had is quite a while, as he lined up sixth for the start.  In the Coke 600, Ragan and the team enjoyed their best race in quite some time, running in the top ten all race and

leading in the late stages before fading to 15th at the finish after a late race restart.  In August, Ragan surprised everyone when he announced that he would retire from full time racing at the end of the season.  His girls were growing up and he wanted to be there to see them grow and be more involved in their lives.  Before the season ended he made an impressive qualifying run at Kansas as he claimed the outside starting spot; only beaten by Rookie Daniel Hemric.  The next week at Martinsville he put together his best race of the season as he came home in 11th place.  It was not known at that time of FRM will fill this seat or reduce down to a two car operation.  Owner Bob Jenkins ran a "Thank You David" paint scheme on his car the final race of 2019 at Homestead.    Ragan said he

was still open to racing part time in 2020 and Ragan did return to racing a small amount in 2020.  Like several other drivers in recent years; Ragan wrapped up his NASCAR Cup career running the 2020 Daytona 500.  He closed out with a bang finishing fourth in the big race.  He also ran the truck owned by David Gilliland at Darlington; he showed he still has what it takes to run up front.  With four laps to go he was running near the front when he got involved with an accident and ended up last on the lead lap.  At Richmond he had another good run finishing seventh.  As several drivers have done the last couple years, Ragan made his final career start running the Daytona 500.  Unfortunately for Ragan; he was involved in ‘the big one’ on lap 13 and crashed out finishing 37th.  Since Ragan  announced his retirement at the end of 2019; he seems

to keep coming back and running a race now and then.  After one start in each 2020 and 2021; he made four starts in 2022.  First he ran the Daytona 500 with Rick Ware Racing.  He finished 8th for his fourth career top 10 finish in the 500.  He raced at his home track of Atlanta next.  He finished on the lead lap; but in 18th place.  He got tangled up and received damage at Talladega losing two laps and finished 24 in that Spring race.  His final start of the year came at Daytona where he was able to post another top 10 as he finished ninth.  It was announced in late 2023 that Ragan would be back behind the wheel of a Cup car in 2024 driving for RFK Racing in the Daytona 500.  So far his career he ran 476 Cup races and won twice.  He had 16 Top 5 and 43 Top 10 finishes.  In the Xfinity series he made 107 starts and also won twice.  Both wins came in 2009.  He also had 17 Top 5 and 49 Top 10 results.  He ran 31 times in the Truck series and had a best finish of fifth.  He also won the 2011 All Star race.  Some info from WikiPedia
