BILLY  SCOTT   -   09/06/1977

Scott got his interest in racing when he was five years old. He raced some himself; and when he stopped, he started helping other people and helped build their cars, go to the racetrack and help set them up. He pretty much covered about every form of racing from motorcycles to RC cars, go-karts and race cars and stuff. When he finally got a job in NASCAR it was on a truck team, as he got in the door by changing tires. Scott’s foray into NASCAR came with Bobby Dotter in the truck series. But the Land O’Lakes, Fla. native hoped for a more challenging position. The former racer turned mechanic/tire changer quickly realized an engineering degree would offer him more options in the sport. Scott had completed two years at the University of Southern Florida — prior to moving to N.C — which made the decision to return to school “easier”. He enrolled at the University of North Carolina—Charlotte and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 2005. Upon graduation, Scott joined Robert Yates

Racing. In 2008, he was hired as a race engineer at Michael Waltrip Racing.  Six years later, he became Brian Vickers’ crew chief. They posted three Top 5 finishes including a second in the July race at Daytona. MWR was in turmoil in 2015 and Scott led five different drivers that season Clint Bowyer ran the most races and claimed the only Top 5 finish, grabbing a fourth place finish at Talladega. At the end of 2015 Michael Waltrip Racing closed it's doors and Scott was left looking for a job. He ended up at Stewart Haas Racing working with Danica Patrick. she had a best finish of eleventh and had 13 Top 20 finishes. It seems she often ended up around 20th to 25th.  As she had 29 finishes inside the Top 25 in 36 starts.  The duo looked to improve the next season, and she did post a season best 10th at Dover; but over-all her results were pretty much the same.  At the end of the season, Patrick retired from full time racing, and for 2018 Scott was paired with Kurt Busch.  Busch gave Scott his first win as a crew chief at Bristol in August.  They made the Chase and had a good shot to make it to the season finale' at Homestead.  The race at Phoenix saw Busch get into a dust up with Denny Hamlin and end their play off hopes.  They ended up seventh in the season points.  In 2019, Scott was paired with Daniel Suarez at Stewart-Haas Racing. They paired together for four top five finishes with a best of third at Texas; both times they raced there.  They had eleven top ten finishes.  Scott did not call the shots full time again until 2022.  Billy Scott and Kurt Busch had a good season going up until the Cup race at Pocono.  They won at Kansas, finished second at Nashville, and added two third (Atlanta, Gateway).  After 20 races they had a win,  five top five and eight top ten finishes.  But a Pocono, Busch spun in qualifying; and backed into the wall hard suffering a concussion.  The injury would keep him out of the car the rest of the season.  Ty Gibbs was called upon to drive the race at Pocono; without any practice or track time in a Cup car at all.  A conservative run saw the youngster bring home the car in 16th on the lead lap.  On the road course at Indy he finished 17th; and the next week Gibbs finished tenth at Michigan.  In 15 starts Gibbs finished inside the top 22 ten times.  Not too bad for a guy with zero track time in a Cup car.  Daniel Hemric drove the car the final race of the year after Gibbs father died suddenly and he had to go home for those family issues.  The win by Busch was the second even Cup win for Scott in 250 attempts.  Scott will return to crew chief for 23XI Racing in 2023; leading the efforts of Tyler Reddick.  Scott and Reddick got off to a slow start as Reddick crashed out of the first two races.  Things improved when they finished 15th at Las Vegas.  They were in the top five the next three events including a win at COTA on the road course.  The season was up and down, several good runs, and then several runs 25th or worse.  The early win locked them into the playoffs, and in the Round of 16 they won at Kansas.  They made it through the next round but in the Round of 8, a 26th place finish at Martinsville eliminated them from the Chase.  They finished the season with a 22nd at Phoenix.  For his career, his drivers have made 285 starts and collected four wins.
