JACK  SMITH   -   05/24/1924 - 10/17/2001

was a pioneer NASCAR driver.  He raced in the very first NASCAR race ever in 1949, and is a member of the NMPA Hall of Fame in Darlington, South Carolina.  Jack Smith moved to Georgia when he was two years old.  He worked at a service station in the 1940's near Roswell.  He began racing against local bootleggers on rough dirt tracks and asphalt superspeedways, and across fields.  He made his debut in NASCAR's first race in 1949 at the Charlotte Speedway and finished 13th.  He is remembered for flipping his car five time and rolling into the parking lot at a 1958 race at Darlington.  He won the NASCAR's Most Popular Driver Award in 1959.  He went to win 21 races over the next 14 years.  He won the very first CUP race ever ran at Bristol (1961).  His first win came at Martinsville in the 1956 Old Dominion 400.  For the time, they had a huge field of 40 cars.  Smith would start 23rd, and drive a Dodge owned by Carl Kiekhaefer.  It would be the only win Smith would claim not driving a car he owned.  In 1957 he would claim four wins wheeling a Chevy.  1958 saw him claim an additional two checkered flags before going out of the park at Darlington.  After that he only ran four of the remaining 12 races that season.  He would rebound and get four wins in 1959 even though he only raced in 21 events.  In 1960 season kicked off it's season at Charlotte on a 1/2 mile dirt track at Southern State Fairgrounds.  He would claim the win there and go on to win a qualifying race a few weeks later at Daytona.  Later that year he won the Fire Cracker 250 at Daytona.  As mentioned above; he won the first ever race

at Bristol, and added another win that season at Greenville, SC.  1962 saw smith collect his most wins in one season.  He ran the entire season running 51 of 53 CUP races run that year.  He finished fourth in the points.  His final career win would come that season at New Asheville Speedway on a 4/10th mile paved bull ring in Asheville, NC.  He scaled his racing way back in 1963 running only 29 of the 53 races.  He only raced four events in 1964 and would retire from racing after running his final race on December 29th at Savannah Speedway in Georgia.  He would run a stout race but finish second to Richard Petty.   For his career he ran in 264 Cup races and had 21 wins and 95 top five finishes. He also raced the four season the NASCAR convertible series was in existence.  He raced in just 16 event over the four year span.  He posted three top 5 finishes; ending up second on three occasions.  He
