TRISTAN  SMITH   -   ?/?/?

Smith grew up riding by the track "too tough to tame".  He graduated in 200 from Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology.  Ever since he was a kid he had a passion for racing; and growing up in Darlington it's hard not to be interested.  While attending college at Clemson, he got an opportunity to work with Darlington's Hal Goodson who raced for a team based out of Greenville SC. He team competed in the NASCAR Slim Jim Series (now K&N Series) and also the NASCAR Xfinity Series.  After class he would stop by the shop and help the team out.  Smith said he stopped by the shop one day and asked if they needed any help.  They hired him on a part time basis and he started traveling with them on weekends starting in 2001.  While climbing the ladder in the sport, Smith formed a friendship with JTG Daugherty Racing's competition director Ernie Cope.  The two worked together at Richard Childress Racing as well as JR Motorsports.  Cope left JR Motorsports and went to work for JTG Daugherty.  When an opening came open there Smith again joined Cope. This time at NASCAR's top level. Half way through the 2017 season; Smith was promoted to crew chief to lead AJ Allmendinger.  They had a best finish of ninth at Watkins Glen and posted four top

20 finishes.  This pair remained together for most of 2018.  Smith and Allmendinger only posted one Top 5's; coming at Daytona in July.  As expected Allmendinger ran well on the road courses.  He had one of the cars to beat at Sonoma, but missed a shift and blew his motor.  At Watkins Glen his had pit stop sat the wrong time and had to work his way through the field and could only muster a 15th place finish.  They only had a total of three Top 10's.  With team mate Chris Buescher also struggling; JTG Daugherty Racing decided to swap crew chiefs for the season's final nine races.  The results proved to be pretty much the same.  Allmendinger was released by the team and Rookie Ryan Preece will wheel the #47 in 2017 with Smith at the helm.  Allmendinger went into TV broadcasting part-time joining MSNBC as a race analysis and also on MSNBC's daily show NASCAR America.  Preece had pretty much the same season in 2019 as Allmendinger had in 2018.  Both had one Top 5 and three Top 10’s.  At the end of the season, Smith moved to be an engineer for the team.
