TRI - CITY  SPEEDWAY   -   HIGH  POINT  NC

Tri City Speedway in High Point, NC was built in 1947 by brothers, Bill and Bob Blair.  The track was a 1/2 mile oval. First race was held in 1947.  The race was a 50 lap Modified event and saw a torrid duel between Buck Baker and Bill Blair.  Bill turned in one of the years most outstanding performances as he finished the race on just three wheels.  Blair was leading on the 15th circuit when he broke a spindle.  He remained on the track and held on to finish second; almost passing Baker on the final lap. 1949-1951 saw several NASCAR Modified races with Tim Flock, Buck Baker, Curtis Turner and Joe Weatherly picking up wins.  The Cup series first came to the track in 1953.  Herb Thomas started in

front and went on to lead 182 of the 200 laps to get the win.  The series returned for the second (and final) race in 1955.  Lee Petty and Buck Baker would battle for the top spot, with Petty grabbing the win over Baker.  The track was closed in 1957.
