RICHARD  WARNER  BOSWELL  III   -   04/18/14984

Richard is the son of former NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Dickie Boswell.  Richard won the World Karting National Championship in 1998, and captured the World Karting Grand National Championship in the same year.  Boswell's one and only start in NASCAR as a driver came in the Xfinity Series in the #5 for JR Motorsports at Memphis.  It was a standalone race for the series, and that car, which was mostly driven by Cup Series drivers that year, needed a different driver with the Cup Series racing at Martinsville that same weekend.  Boswell qualified an impressive third in his debut and finished 23rd in the race.  Boswell joined Stewart-Haas Racing in 2017, where he served as a crew chief for their upstart Xfinity Series program.  He crew chiefed the part-time #41 Ford driven by Kevin Harvick in his part-time schedule of races in the series that year.  He was also the interim crew chief that year for Clint Bowyer's #14 SHR team in the Cup Series for the race at Texas in November after Mike Bugarewicz was suspended.  The following year, Stewart-Haas expanded their NXS team even further, with them merging with the Biagi Brothers Racing #98 team.

In turn, the #41 was closed down for 2018 and the Biagi #98 was fielded as SHR's second car. After this, Boswell moved over to that car, replacing Jon Hansen as its crew chief.  He also worked with Chase Briscoe, a Ford development driver who was running part-time for them as well as Roush Fenway Racing.  He got his first win as a crew chief at Atlanta in 2018 with Kevin Harvick behind the wheel.  Later that same season Briscoe would win on the Roval at Charlotte.  He was then paired with Briscoe as he moved to race full time in the Xfinity Series in 2019.  They got a win at Iowa; while posting 13 Top 5 and 26 Top 10 results on the season. They finished fifth in the points just missing out on a shot to race at Homestead for the Championship.  In 2020 Briscoe raced in the Xfinity Series again; and wanted to win enough races to earn himself a spot in the top level.  He stated he wanted to win eight races; and that should open some peoples eyes.  The pair started strong with a fifth at Daytona; and then won the next week at Las Vegas.  Three weeks later he won at Darlington.  At homestead a weight fell out of the car on the pace laps.  Unsecured weight on a race car is a huge no-no in NASCAR and Boswell paid the price with a four race suspension.  During those four races Greg Zipadelli stepped in to lead Briscoe; and the duo grabbed three wins.  When Boswell return atop the box; the pair picked up right where they had left off.  Over the next three races they had a fourth at Kentucky followed by two second place finishes.  The pair won again at Dover in August.  They won back to back weeks again as Briscoe won the final race of the regular season; held at Bristol; and kicked off the Chase with a win at Las Vegas.  He won the first race of the final round in the Chase; and advance to the Championship race at Phoenix.  Briscoe ran well in the Championship; even leading 41 laps.  But the car just wasn't fast enough to keep up with his other Championship competitors as he finished ninth in the race and fourth in points.  Turns out that Briscoe was correct in his pre-season prediction about eight wins opening some peoples eyes.  His nine wins earned him a seat in the #14 in the Cup Series driving for Stewart-Haas Racing.  Johnny Klausmeier was the crew chief of that car in 2020 and has been retained to call the shots for Briscoe in 2021.  Boswell will remain with the #98 team and Riley Herbst drove that car in 2021.  Herbst had a good season; but didn’t collect any wins.  He was in position to win on several occasions; but something seemed to happen to cost him the victory.  The paid did manage to collect five Top 5 and 13 Top 10 finishes.  Herbst will remain in the Xfinity Series for 2022 and Boswell will once again be his crew chief.  Boswell led Herbst to his best year to date.  Although they didn't get any wins; they did pair up to have eight top five finishes and 20 top tens in 33 starts.  Herbst made the play-offs, but a finish of 32nd at the Roval, eliminated him after the first round.  Boswell has spent the majority of his career working with drivers in the Xfinity series.  In 2023 he once again was paired with Riley Herbst in the #98 Xfinity car.  They were together the first 14 races, which saw them finish in the top ten to kick off the season’s first six races.  Then SHR moved Boswell up to the Cup series to work with Chase Briscoe the remainder of the year, replacing Johnny Klausmeier.  Following the Coke 600, NASCAR issued an L3 penalty for Chase Briscoe after a post-race inspection revealed a counterfeit engine panel NACA duct; as a result, the team was docked 125 owner and driver points and 25 playoff points, and Klausmeier was suspended for six races and fined US$250,000.  In June, it was announced that Richard Boswell would be taking over for Chase Briscoe for the rest of the reason, while Klausmeier would be moved over to the part of the company's vehicle performance group after his suspension was over.  The duo had a best finish of fourth at Martinsville as the season neared it’s close.  They had a sixth place run on the road course at Indy, and had two other top ten finishes.
