DOUBLE  DIPPERS

I'm going to show some of the drivers that have drove in both NASCAR and in the Indy 500.  This is a 'sampling' of the more notable drivers.  I have found many more I have not shown that raced at Indy and only had one or two NASCAR starts.  A total of 90 drivers I have found that raced both (and I probably missed a few)

I am listing them in chronological order so you can look at how the cars changed over the decades.
FIRST though I'll toss out a couple things here first.  Chip Ganassi; Shige Hattori and the Wood Brothers.

1947 Red Byron - unfortunately he missed the 500 field

1948 Johnny Mantz

1950 - Dick Rathman

1957 Marshall Teague

1958 Paul Goldsmith

1959 Al Keller

Around 1950 we started to see a roll bar introduced to help protect the driver in roll over crashes

1963 Junior Johnson - unfortunately he missed the field

1963 Indy winner - Parnelli Jones

1964 Indy winner - AJ Foyt
Also won 1961, 1967 & 1977

Innovative Smokey Yunick brought driver Bobby Johns to Indy in 1964 - check out this side car set up.

1964 Chuck Stevenson

The famous Wood Brothers pitted the car of race winner Jimmy Clark in 1965.  The Wood Brothers attention to detail and ability to synchronize their pits stops helped Clark to get the win.

1964 Jim Hurtubise

1967 Cale Yarborough

1965 saw the introduction of the rear engine racers

1967 LeeRoy Yarbrough

1968 Indy winner Bobby Unser also won in 1975 & 1981

1969 Indy winner Mario Andretti

1969 Dan Gurney

1970 Indy winner Al Unser also won in '71, '78. & '87

1971 Donnie Allison

In 1971 we saw a lot of cars start running front and rear wings.
Notice the rear wings are as wide a the outside of the rear tires and created a LOT of downforce.
Also air induction moved from the nose to the side pods

1972 Indy winner Mark Donohue

1973 Bobby Allison

1973 Indy winner Gordon Johncock

1974 Pancho Carter

By 1976 rear wing size had been greatly reduced, and fit INSIDE the rear tires,
check out the rear wings above in 1972 and 1973

1976 Indy winner Johnny Rutherford also 1974 & 1980

1978 Janet Guthrie

1980 Tim Richmond

1983 Indy winner Tom Sneva

1983 Chip Ganassi - Cup series car owner

1985 Indy Winner - Danny Sullivan

By the early '90's the nose had changed even more and had evolved into a bullet looking design.
We still see the small front and rear spoilers - and rear spoilers added side flaps

1992 Indy winner - Al Unser Jr also won in 1994

1992 John Andretti

1992 Scott Pruett

1993 Robby Gordon

1993 Willy T Ribbs

2000 Jason Leffler

2000 Indy winner Juan Pablo Montoya

2001 Scott Sharp

2003 Shige Hattori - 2018 Truck series Championship owner

2005 Patrick Carpentier

2006 Danica Patrick

2006 Max Papis

2006 Indy winner Sam Hornish

2006 Larry Foyt

2007 Indy winner Dario Franchitti

Cars get lower and sleeker.  Sidepods now extend out as far as the outside of the rear tires.
Rear wings are even smaller and even have a sort of rear "fender" added behind the rear wheels to help make cars more aerodynamic and air off of the rear tires where it created a lot of drag.

2013 AJ Allmendinger

2014 Kurt Busch

2020 James Davison

2022 Conor Daly

2022 Jimmie Johnson

Rumors are Cup champions Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch could be looking to run the Indy 500 in 2023 or 2024
